the raker The Raker had all of Autumn to rake the leaves, so he didn't understand why his mother was flipping out right now about how it needed to get done now. He just didn't understand it. Even if he raked up the entire yard, tomorrow, there would just be more leaves on the ground. And of all different colors, too. That's what he liked most about Autumn. That, and the way its first few days really are a complete switch from the season before it. Like God just turned a switch: OK, AUTUMN NOW.
But he didn't really mind raking the leaves. It was the hassle to do it quickly, as if it were some kind of urgent task, that Michael really didn't much like. He liked to see the leaves on the ground for a while before he had to rake them up. What's the point of leaves dying and falling off of a tree if we aren't even going to enjoy their beautiful colors qua-annually decorate our ground? Just like how grownups like to pile snow to the side, also, and clear the driveway. Or put salt on the roads so that all of it will melt. Why can't we just enjoy what falls to the ground? Nature said so. But today, as reluctant as he is, Michael is going to rake the leaves without problem. And that is because he has come up with a solution! Instead of raking up all of the leaves and just putting them into a garbage bag on the side of the road, he is going to take said garbage bag to his friend Tyler's house, and put all of his leaves in Tyler's yard, and they are going to make one giant leaf pile! And after they jump in the pile for a while, he and Tyler are just going to leave the leafs out, and let their colors paint the ground for a few more days. The way Michael sees it, he'll have his fun and then let the wind of nature blow its course. Who needs a rake anyways? |
